Overview

  • Varanasi is a sacred city in Hinduism and has many temples and shrines, including the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is considered one of the holiest Shiva temples and holds the jyotirlinga of Shiva Vishveshwara. 
  • Ghats

    Varanasi has many ghats on the riverfront, including the Dashashwamedh Ghat, the Panchganga Ghat, the Manikarnika Ghat, and the Harishchandra Ghat. The Manikarnika Ghat and the Harishchandra Ghat are where Hindus cremate their dead.

    Varanasi is known for its silks and brocades, hand-knotted carpets, Banarasi sarees, rudraksha malas, idols of gods, Banarasi sweets, bangles, and other accessories. 

  • Festivals

    Varanasi hosts many religious festivals. 

  • Liquor and non-vegetarian food: The sale and consumption of liquor and meat is banned within a 250-meter radius of all temples and heritage sites in Varanasi. This includes on cruises in Varanasi. 
  • Satellite phones and drone cameras: These are not permitted in Varanasi. 
  • Entry to the Vishwanath Temple: Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter the Vishwanath Temple. 
  • Dress code: There is a dress code for the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Men must wear a dhoti-kurta and women must wear a saree for sparsh-darshan. 
  • Itinerary adjustments: Itineraries may be adjusted due to local conditions and days of the week to avoid closures of monuments and museums.
